In spite of mixed reviews, Mersal more or less established hero Vijay as the numero uno star of Tamil film world. Confirming this, Tamil Nadu’s top distributor Siva says that Vijay is number one in the core TN market. Siva had earlier released Vijay’s Nanban, Thuppakki and Kaththi in Tiruchirappalli and Thanjavur districts of the southern state. Another reason why Vijay continues to be the number one in TN is the pre-release trade of the actor’s Sarkar. The hero’s Diwali release is much higher than the share of Baahubali 2: The Conclusion, which continues to be the benchmark for all the language movie industries in India.
Theater owners and distributors in Tamil Nadu are confident that Vijay’s Sarkar will surpass Baahubali 2: The Conclusion in the state. The same exhibitors and distributors feel that Vijay is the only hero can cross the record set by Baahubali 2 in TN, because it is the hero’s home ground. Siva says Vijay’s market and the distribution price will increase with each given film. He has to release his films on Diwali to match the expectations. It is worth mentioning here that Vijay’s new film with Atlee is scheduled to release on 2019 Diwali.
Film analysts say Vijay is a producers’ delight as his films rarely fail at the box office. In fact, his films will be superhits if they are released during Diwali time. Vijay’s next with Atlee is also scheduled to release on Diwali 2019. If one looks at the TN box office, Vijay’s movies are doing exceptionally well. As a matter of fact, his movies have surpassed superstar Rajinikanth’s films. However, Vijay is yet to make his mark in the North Indian and Telugu markets. Therefore, with Sarkar, the hero will be exploring the Telugu market. Vijay, however, has a strong BO pull in Kerala, Sri Lanka and European countries and to some extent in the US.
