This appears to be a season of biopics. First it was one on Mahatma Gandhi, Ambedkar, sprinter Milka Singh, then on Silk Smitha and finally on Savitri. Except for one, all the other biopics went on to become superhits. Now, it is the time for one on the legendary singer-composer Ghantasala Venkateswara Rao.
Shooting for the biopic, being bankrolled by Lakshmi Neeraja and written and directed by Ch. Rama Rao, is done in cities like Vizianagaram, Chennai and Hyderabad. Popular playback singer Krishna Chaitanya is essaying the title role in the biopic named ‘Ghantasala – The Great’.
Others starring in the biopic include Mrudhula, Athulith (as child Ghantasala), Subbaraya Sharma, Deekshith, JK Bharavi and Ashok Kumar. Saluru Vasu Rao scored the music for the biopic, which tells the story of how Ghantasala had to beg for alms and even suffer a jail term for showing his passion for music and singing.
On Thursday, without much hungama, popular playback singer SP Balasubramaniam released the teaser of the biopic. It is interesting to note that the producers of the film are bankrolling the project even though the family members of the legendary singer-composer have shown great reluctance in contributing to the biopic in any way.
Ghantasala mainly composed music and sang in Telugu films. He, however, scored music for films in Tamil, Kannada in addition to movies in other South Indian languages. He was the recipient of Padmasri Award in 1970 for his contribution to Indian films.
Speaking during the teaser releasing function, music composer MM Keeravani recalled his association with Ghantasala
