Top Telugu film heroes, right from the days of Chitoor Nagaiah, have been active in areas like charity and philanthropy. Telugu heroes have been giving back to the society in one form or the other, some openly and some not so openly. In doing so, they have been trying to meet popular aspirations. At the same time, they have been winning over the hearts of their ever-growing fans. Over the years, with channels like charity becoming more streamlined and organized, the fan base of the Telugu heroes have also grown into organized entities. These popular heroes either directly or indirectly channelize the energies of their fan clubs and associations for reaching out to the society at large.
Here are some of the top Telugu heroes, who are among the luckiest one per cent of humanity, who are actively being associated with charitable and philanthropic activities meant for the needy.
Chiranjeevi: In 1998, this very popular actor-turned-politician established the Chiranjeevi Charitable Trust with the twin objective of setting up Blood and Eye Banks for the benefit of the needy. He even donated Rs.5 lakhs for the construction of a building for the handicapped in Uppalaguptam village of East Godavari district, Andhra Pradesh.
Nagarjuna Akkineni: Nagarjuna’s father, late Akkineni Nageswara Rao (ANR), was known for charity work. But one hand did not know what the other was doing. But, Nagarjuna happily and openly takes part as the brand ambassador for HIV/AIDS awareness campaigns. He and his wife Amala co-founded the Blue Cross Society. Interestingly, Nagarjuna also pledged to donate his organs. He is also the brand ambassador for the Organ Donation campaign jointly initiated by Jeevandan, a government institution, and a private hospital chain.
Venkatesh: He does his charity work from behind the scenes. He is publicity shy. Venkatsh frequently donates big amounts to the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund.
Nandamuri Balakrishna: This actor-turned-politician, with the help of his fan’s association and the charitable arm NBK Helping Hands is providing education to more than 1,000 destitute children across Andhra Pradesh.
Mahesh Babu: Mahesh, who is the son of yesteryear top hero G Krishna, is known for his charitable activities. He allocates at least 30% of his annual income for charity works. Also, he has been appointed the goodwill ambassador of Heal-a-Child Foundation. As part of his social welfare activities, Mahesh is said to have decided to donate at least Rs 1.5 crore to Heal-a-Child Foundation. Earlier, Mahesh had donated Rs 25 lakh to the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund to be utilized for the welfare of the victims of Hudhud cyclone.
Pawan Kalyan: Actor Pawan Kalyan is an inspiration when it comes to charity. Pawan donated Rs 50 lakh for the welfare of the victims of Hudhud cyclone. The actor continues to share part of his annual income with NGOs like old age homes and orphanages.
